Maltman has had a lengthy relationship with John Constable’s work. In particular his many paintings of Branch Hill Pond in Hampstead. Maltman visited the site which is now a wide dried up grassy bowl which still evokes the topography of the 19th century watering hole. The paintings continue Maltman’s preoccupation with halving his works into loose figurative representations which seem to hurry towards freedom in the abstract areas of the painting.
