The work captures the surreal encounter between Titania, the fairy queen, and Bottom, transformed into a creature with the head of a donkey. What begins as a mythical moment of enchantment becomes, in Böhmer’s hands, an exploration of desire, fantasy, and the strange logic of attraction.
The painting radiates raw physicality and emotional energy. The vibrant palette of turquoise, magenta, and yellow heightens the tension between passion and absurdity. Böhmer’s signature rough texture and dense black contours give the composition a tactile immediacy, turning the myth into something both primal and contemporary.
Sommernachtstraum is not simply a retelling of Shakespeare’s scene but a celebration of transformation and instinct. It reflects on the power of desire to dissolve boundaries between beauty and grotesque, human and animal, reason and dream. The result is an image that feels both intimate and explosive, a visual ode to the chaos of love.
