Hand-ground pigments sourced in Colombia are layered and lightly scraped so the face gathers and dissolves across the surface. Warm reds and siennas meet cool greens and pale lilac; in several highlights the faint grid of the mesh remains visible, catching the light and giving the image a quiet vibration. The head turns slightly left and one eye anchors the composition, while small translucent passages brighten or recede as the viewer moves. The work sits between figuration and abstraction and forms part of Callejas’s ongoing inquiry into how recognition unfolds over time. Materials are prepared in the studio with bespoke binders, giving the painting a precise, tactile register.
