This piece is rich in its colour and layering. The paint is applied in thick and thin swathes across the canvas, so the subject of the painting feels simultaneously far away and near the viewer, slightly skewing our perception. Philip Maltman’s use of light and warm yellows alongside deep burgundies and browns gives this painting a particular earthy depth.
